Alebrijes - imaginary creatures formed from different parts of real and imaginary animals were invented by Pedro Linares López in 1936. One day Pedro got sick and for a while he was unconscious. In this state he saw the creatures that uttered a single word - "alebrijes"... When Pedro woke up he began to remember what the creatures looked like in his dream and beganto make paper mache figures and paint them. This type of craft became popular in the 70s of the last century. Wooden alebrijes are also made.
