Alebrijes [alebri:hes] - imaginary creatures formed from different parts of real and imaginary animals. They were invented by Pedro Linares López in 1936. One day Pedro fell ill and was unconscious for a while. In this state, strange beings appeared uttering only one word - "alebrijes"...
When Pedro awoke, he began to recall how these creatures in his dreams looked like and began to make painted paper mache figures that looked exactly like them. This craft became popular in the middle of the 70s (XX century). Today alebrijes are made not only using paper mache but also wood. Figures can be found in different sizes - from a few centimeters to a few meters tall.
