Alebrijes

Alebrijes – imaginary creatures made from different parts of real and imaginary animals. They were invented by Pedro Linares López in 1936. One day Pedro fell ill and was unconscious for a while. In this state he saw some strange creatures that uttered a single word – “alebrijes”.

When Pedro woke up he remembered what the creatures looked like in his dream and began to make papier mache figures and paint them. This is how the alebrijes were born.

Today alebrijes are made not only from paper mache but also from wood.

The alebrijes that you find in our store are made of wood, made and painted completely by hand and come from San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca state.
